"We believe there is merit in preserving open space, maintaining habitat for wild animals, keeping the fields in agricultural use, and providing the public with uncluttered views of the mountain ridges lying parallel to South Branch Mountain."

Strategic Plan

Countdown To River Health: 2006-2010

Great FallsThe Potomac Conservancy's strategic plan - Countdown to River Health: 2006-2010 - seeks to make the Potomac River and its tributaries healthier, more beautiful, and more enjoyable for all of us. Our strategic goals:

Protecting Water Quality

The Potomac and its tributaries provide drinking water to millions of residents throughout the watershed. To reduce sediment and nutrient pollution, the Conservancy will:

  • Work with landowners and local governments to protect and restore streamside areas
  • Advocate for the adoption and enforcement of sound land use policies and practices
  • Push for long-term funding for water quality improvements, including land conservation
  • Assess and respond to new, urgent threats to river health

Preserving Scenic Landscapes

As the world's "wildest" urban river, the Potomac possesses enormous, albeit insufficiently protected, scenic value. To preserve the Potomac's scenic vistas, the Conservancy will:

  • Garner broad public recognition of the river's world-class scenic resources
  • Lead a campaign to identify the highest-valued riverscapes
  • Develop and implement protection plans for these special places

Encouraging Responsible Recreation

Recreation is one of the most important ways people come to appreciate the Potomac River. To ensure that people can enjoy the river, the Conservancy will:

  • Expand and improve river access
  • Inform people about opportunities for high-quality outings and low-impact practices
  • Partner with the Potomac Heritage Trail Association to create volunteer workdays along this national scenic trail
  • Educate the public about the C&O Canal National Historical Park through its River Center at Lockhouse 8
