Open House: River Center at Lockhouse 8
Weekends, May 3 through October 26, 10 am - 2 pm
C&O Canal National Historical Park, Cabin John, MD

Potomac Conservancy docents will be on hand to lead groups through the restored lockhouse and interactive exhibits that show the connection between the Canal, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to the open house hours, the Conservancy has scheduled the following events for May and June.

River Center Open
Saturday, May 3, 10 am-2 pm
The 2008 season at the River Center will be officially opened at10 am by Potomac Conservancy board member Mark Van Putten. A morning bird walk will follow along the C&O Canal lead by Kevin Mack of The Wilderness Society. Potomac Conservancy docents will be on hand to lead groups through the restored lockhouse and interactive exhibits that show the connection between the Canal, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Voices of the River Concert, Reed Martin
Sunday, May 4, 2-3 pm
Reed Martin, winner of old-time banjo contests for 30 years, will be playing a very old claw-style banjo to the beat of the river. Come enjoy the scenic scenes of the river on the steps of the River Center while listening to the tunes of the banjo.

Bird Walk
Saturday, May 10, 8-10 am
Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day with bird expert Paul Hagen from American Bird Conservancy for a morning hike along the C&O Canal during migration season. So, don’t forget your binoculars. After the walk Potomac Conservancy docents will be on hand to lead groups through the restored lockhouse and interactive exhibits that show the connection between the Canal, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Dog Walk
Saturday, May 17, 10-11 am
Meet with four-legged and two-legged friends for a scenic pooch parade along the C&O Canal Tow Path and surrounding trails. Potomac Conservancy docents will be on hand to lead groups through the restored lockhouse and interactive exhibits that show the connection between the Canal, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.

River Stories, LCC, Hayden Mathews
Sunday, May 25, 2-3 pm
Eco-historian Hayden Mathews will give an interactive talk which will weave regional history, natural history, and geology to interpret the forces and events that shaped both the Potomac River and the people that have lived on its banks for the past 12,000 years.

Voices of the River, Glen Echoers
Sunday, June 1, 2-3 pm
Come listen to the Glen Echoers “ring a chord” as this barbershop quartet sings in close harmony with the flow of the river on the porch of the River Center. The Glen Echoers are an acapella quartet with Charlie Sheridan, singing Bass, Richard Cook, singing Lead, Mike Holmes, singing Tenor, and Ken Sleeman, singing Baritone. They are a registered barbershop quarter with the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.

Children’s Bug Walk
Saturday, June 7, 1-2 pm
Volunteer naturalist Deborah Landau will lead families on a walking journey along the C&O Canal to discover the creepy crawlies that children love and can find in their own backyard and along the Potomac River. Before the walk Potomac Conservancy docents will be on hand to lead groups through the restored lockhouse and interactive exhibits that show the connection between the Canal, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Bike Tour
Saturday, June 14, 9am
We will meet at the River Center at Lockhouse 8 and pedal along the C&O Canal Tow Path and Berma Rd. trail to the scenic overlook at Great Falls and then return to the River Center. Potomac Conservancy docents will be on hand to lead groups through the restored lockhouse and interactive exhibits that show the connection between the Canal, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Photography along the Canal
Sunday, June 22, 8-10 am
Join photographer Joanne Miller for some one-on-one pointers as you capture the sights along the C&O Canal. Bring your favorite camera and a good eye. After the session Potomac Conservancy docents will be on hand to lead groups through the restored lockhouse and interactive exhibits that show the connection between the Canal, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay. www.potomac.org.

Picnic and Canoe Clean-up
Saturday, June 28, 9am-12pm
Help protect our waterway by taking a short canoe trip to Minnie’s island. After an island/river clean-up we’ll enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch on the island, dessert will be provided. After the clean-up Potomac Conservancy docents will be on hand to lead groups through the restored lockhouse and interactive exhibits that show the connection between the Canal, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.
