Borrow a Seed "Mower" for Your Collection

Do you have tons of seeds under a big oak tree and not a lot of hands to pick them all up? Borrow a "Bag a Nut" from Potomac Conservancy. A Bag a Nut works similar to a lawn mower but it picks up seeds by simply "mowing" over them. In order to borrow the Bag a Nut for a day, contact Colleen Langan. Borrowers will be responsible for picking up and returning the Bag a Nut to the Potomac Conservancy office in Silver Spring, Maryland. Contact: Colleen Langan, Growing Native Project Director, langan@potomac.org or 301.608.1188, ext. 211.

Montgomery Cty. Sponsors Pound-Per-Kid Collection Contest

Growing Native is featuring a contest this fall to see which school in the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) system can collect the most pounds of native tree seeds.

Seed collection runs from October until the first week of November. The school with the most collect pounds of various seeds types divided by the number of students who participate will win an award and be recognized on the Growing Native web site. As an added incentive, middle and high school students can earn SSL credit for participating in Growing Native.

For more information on the contest, collection guidelines and Growing Native program, schools should contact Colleen Langan, Growing Native Project Director, langan@potomac.org or 301.608.1188, ext. 211.
